Glow can sync loyalty data to Shopify metafields so you can use it in Shopify, reporting, customer-facing theme work, receipts, emails, and supported Shopify automation tools.
In current Glow, this is managed by Glow. You do not need to turn on a separate Save Loyalty Data to Shopify setting.
What Glow saves to Shopify
Glow creates and updates loyalty metafields for Shopify customers and orders.
Shopify record | Glow field | Field key | What it means |
Customer | Point balance |
| The customer's current points balance. |
Customer | Lifetime points |
| Total points the customer has earned since joining your program. |
Customer | VIP tier |
| The customer's current VIP tier label. If the customer is not in a tier, Glow may save |
Customer | Points to next reward |
| How many more points the customer needs for their next available reward. |
Customer | Birthdate |
| The customer's birthday, if the customer has provided one in Glow. |
Order | Points earned |
| The points earned from that Shopify order. |
Glow updates these values after loyalty activity changes the customer or order, such as earning points, redeeming points, updating VIP tier status, saving a birthday, or awarding points for an order. Updates run in the background, so allow a few minutes before checking Shopify.
Do I need to turn anything on?
No. Current Glow does not have a separate loyalty-metafield switch in Settings > Account Settings.
The Data Handling section in Glow controls other customer-data behavior, such as whether Glow saves customer names from Shopify and whether reward discount codes are locked to the customer who earned them.
If you remember seeing older instructions for Save Loyalty Data to Shopify, those instructions are no longer the right setup path for the current app.
Where can I find this in Shopify?
In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Metafields and metaobjects.
Glow writes loyalty data for:
Customers, for each customer's loyalty balance and tier details.
Orders, for points earned from a Shopify order.
Because Glow uses app-owned metafields, the fields may not behave exactly like custom metafields you manually create in Shopify. Some Shopify screens and tools show app-owned fields clearly; others may not expose them in the same picker.
Easy ways to use loyalty data
You can use synced loyalty data anywhere Shopify supports the relevant customer or order metafield for your setup.
Common examples:
Show logged-in customers their points balance or VIP tier on an account page.
Add a cart or account-page message like Only 20 points until your next reward.
Include You earned 75 points on this order in a receipt or notification template that supports order metafields.
Use Shopify Flow or reporting tools when they can read the relevant customer or order metafield.
Segment customers by loyalty tier or point balance when your Shopify tool supports those fields.
For customer-facing theme edits, show loyalty values only to the logged-in customer they belong to.
Should I edit these values in Shopify?
No. Treat these Shopify metafields as a copy of the loyalty data in Glow.
If a customer's point balance, VIP tier, or birthday needs to change, update it in Glow. Glow will sync the updated value back to Shopify.
Troubleshooting
I do not see values yet
Give Glow a few minutes after the customer earns, redeems, or otherwise changes points.
Also check that the member is connected to a real Shopify customer. Glow does not sync loyalty metafields for manual-only members that do not have a Shopify customer record.
I cannot choose these fields in a Shopify tool
Do not create duplicate metafield definitions unless Glow support specifically asks you to.
Glow creates and writes its loyalty metafields through the app. If a Shopify screen, Flow action, theme setting, or third-party app cannot see the fields you need, contact Glow support with the Shopify tool you are trying to use and the exact customer or order field you need.
The order does not show points earned
The order metafield is only set when Glow awards points for that Shopify order. If the order was excluded from earning points, did not qualify for points, or points have not finished processing yet, the order may not have a points_earned value.
The values look wrong
Check the member in Glow first. Shopify should mirror Glow, not replace it.
If Glow is correct but Shopify still looks stale after a few minutes, contact support and include:
The Shopify customer or order URL.
The member's current balance or tier in Glow.
Which Shopify field or tool is showing the stale value.
