How do I give points to customers and friends for referrals?

Use the referral point settings when you want Glow to reward the existing customer who shares a referral link, the new customer who uses it, or both.

The existing member is the customer who shares their referral link. The new member is the customer who joins or orders through that link.

Before you start

  • Make sure the referral program is enabled.

  • Decide when referrals should be rewarded: when the new customer signs up, when they make their first purchase, or on referred orders.

  • Decide whether both sides should earn points. You can set either point amount to 0 if that customer should not receive referral points.

Set referral point amounts

  1. In Glow, go to Rewards > Referral Program.

  2. Set Program Status to Enabled.

  3. Under Issue rewards when..., choose when Glow should award referral points.

  4. In How many points would you like to reward the existing member?, enter the points for the customer who shares the referral link.

  5. In How many points would you like to reward the new member?, enter the points for the referred customer.

  6. Select Save Settings.

How the point amounts work

If New customer signs up is selected, Glow can award referral points when the referred customer is connected to the referral.

If New customer makes their first purchase is selected, Glow can award referral points after the referred customer's qualifying first order is processed.

If Award a flat amount on every order is selected, Glow uses the point amounts as flat values on qualifying referred orders.

If Award a variable amount on every order based on order total is selected, Glow treats the point amounts as points per currency unit. For example, in a USD store, 5 means 5 points per USD of the referred order total.

The new member's referral points are separate from any normal signup points you have enabled. If both are enabled, a new referred customer may earn signup points and referral points.

What customers see

When referrals are enabled, customers can see a Refer a friend earning option in the loyalty widget.

Logged-in customers can open their referral link from the widget. The widget may show the existing member's referral earning amount, and that amount can reflect customer or VIP multipliers when your program is configured to multiply referral points.

How to test referral points

  1. Open the loyalty widget as an existing test customer.

  2. Copy that customer's referral link.

  3. Open the link in a clean browser session or use a test customer that has not already been referred.

  4. Complete the action you selected in Issue rewards when....

  5. In Glow, check Analytics > Referral Stats and the customer's point activity.

For first-purchase referrals, use a brand-new customer with no previous order history so the test is clean.

Common issues

No referral points were awarded

Check that Program Status is Enabled and that the point amount for the customer you expected to reward is greater than 0.

Then check Issue rewards when.... If the setting waits for a first purchase or referred order, points will not appear at signup.

The new customer did not get points

Make sure How many points would you like to reward the new member? is greater than 0.

Also make sure the customer used a valid referral link and was not already connected to another referral.

The existing member earned more points than the number in settings

Check your VIP and multiplier settings. Referral points can be multiplied when your program is configured to apply multipliers to referral earning.

A first-purchase referral did not award points after an order

Use a new test customer with no previous orders, then check whether the order qualified for points. Order rules or disabled order points can affect first-purchase referral behavior.
