How do I create percentage and free shipping rewards?

Percentage and free shipping rewards let customers exchange points for popular Shopify discount types.

Percentage and free shipping rewards let customers exchange points for popular Shopify discount types.

Use a percentage reward when you want customers to get a percent off their order, such as 10% or 15% off.

Use a free shipping reward when you want customers to exchange points for free shipping, with or without a minimum order amount.

Before you start

Before you create the reward, decide:

  • How many points the reward should cost.

  • For percentage rewards, what percent discount customers should receive.

  • For free shipping rewards, whether customers must meet a minimum order amount.

  • Whether the generated discount code can combine with other Shopify discounts.

  • Whether the discount should apply to one-time purchases only or both subscription and one-time purchases.

The point cost and the discount value are different settings. The point cost is what the customer spends. The discount value is what the customer receives.

Create a percentage reward

From your Glow dashboard, go to Rewards > Manage Rewards, then select Add Reward.

Give the reward a clear customer-facing name. Customers will see this name when they redeem their points.

In Reward Type, choose Percentage Off.

Enter the point cost in How many points does this reward cost?

Then enter the percentage in Reward Value.

For example, to let customers spend 1,200 points for 15% off:

  • How many points does this reward cost? 1200

  • Reward Value 15

Percentage reward settings

Glow may also show Total spent to qualify for reward under the point cost. This is an estimate based on your store's points-per-purchase earning rule. It is not the reward value.

Choose where a percentage discount applies

Use Discount Applies to to decide which orders can use the percentage discount code created by this reward.

You can choose:

  • All Orders

  • Order above a minimum amount

  • Single Product

  • Single Collection

If you choose Order above a minimum amount, enter the minimum order amount.

If you choose Single Product or Single Collection, Glow will ask you to select the product or collection.

Create a free shipping reward

From Rewards > Manage Rewards, select Add Reward again.

Give the reward a clear name, then choose Free Shipping in Reward Type.

Enter the point cost in How many points does this reward cost?

Free shipping rewards do not use the Reward Value field. When you choose Free Shipping, Glow hides that field because the discount value is free shipping.

Choose where the free shipping discount applies:

  • All Orders

  • Order above a minimum amount

For example, to let customers spend 2,000 points for free shipping on orders over $50:

  • Reward Type Free Shipping

  • How many points does this reward cost? 2000

  • Discount Applies to Order above a minimum amount

  • Minimum Amount of Order 50

Free shipping reward settings

Free shipping rewards are shipping discounts, so Glow does not show the normal shipping-discount combination option for this reward type.

Review usage, purchase type, combinations, and prefix

Percentage and free shipping rewards use the same general reward settings as other discount rewards.

Review these before saving:

  • How many times can the reward be redeemed?

  • Once redeemed, how many times can the customer use the discount?

  • Purchase Type

  • Discount Combinations

  • Discount Code Prefix

  • VIP Tier

  • Enabled?

Use How many times can the reward be redeemed? to control how often customers can exchange points for the reward.

Use Once redeemed, how many times can the customer use the discount? to control how many times the generated discount code can be used.

For most rewards, 1 is the safest discount-use setting because the discount code can only be used once.

Use Discount Code Prefix if you want generated discount codes to start with a recognizable prefix, such as PERCENT15- or SHIP50-.

Save the rewards

Set Enabled? to Enabled, then select Save Reward.

After saving, Glow sends you back to the Manage Rewards page.

The saved list shows:

  • The reward name.

  • The reward type.

  • The discount value.

  • The point cost.

  • Whether the reward is enabled.

Saved percentage and free shipping rewards

For a percentage reward, the Value column shows the percent off, such as 15.00% Off.

For a free shipping reward, the Value column shows Free Shipping.

The Cost column shows how many points the customer needs to redeem the reward.

How customers redeem these rewards

When a customer has enough points, they can redeem the reward in the customer-facing rewards widget.

For a percentage reward, Glow creates a percentage discount code and subtracts the reward's point cost from the customer's balance.

For a free shipping reward, Glow creates a free shipping discount code and subtracts the reward's point cost from the customer's balance.

Test the reward

Before relying on a new reward in your live loyalty program, test it with a customer who has enough points.

  1. Create or choose a test customer.

  2. Make sure the customer has enough points for the reward.

  3. Open the customer-facing rewards widget.

  4. Redeem the reward.

  5. Confirm the discount code is created.

  6. Confirm the discount works at checkout.

  7. Confirm the customer's points were deducted.

If the reward has a minimum order amount, product restriction, collection restriction, purchase type setting, or combination setting, test that behavior at checkout too.

Troubleshooting

The reward does not show for a customer

Make sure the reward is enabled and the customer has enough points to redeem it.

Also check whether the reward is limited to a VIP tier or has order restrictions.

Glow asks me to enter a reward value

Percentage rewards require a Reward Value because Glow needs to know the percent discount to create.

Free shipping rewards do not require a reward value. If you are creating a free shipping reward, make sure Reward Type is set to Free Shipping.

The free shipping reward does not show product or collection options

This is expected. In the current reward editor, free shipping rewards can apply to all orders or orders above a minimum amount.

The customer cannot use the discount code at checkout

Check the reward's minimum order amount, purchase type, and discount combination settings.

If the reward requires a minimum order amount, make sure the checkout meets that minimum.

If the discount is being used with other discounts, make sure the combination settings allow that combination in Shopify.

The percentage amount is not what I expected

Check Reward Value.

For a percentage reward, entering 15 creates a 15% discount. The point cost only controls how many points the customer spends.
