If bots are creating customer accounts or loyalty members, use Shopify's spam protection to reduce bot signups and Glow's member creation blocklist to stop matching email addresses from becoming new loyalty members.
Short answer
Start with Shopify's spam protection, because that helps prevent bot signups at the storefront level.
Then use Glow's Block New Member Creation by Email setting when you know the exact emails, email domains, or email patterns you want Glow to ignore.
Step 1: Turn on Shopify spam protection
In Shopify admin:
Go to Online Store > Preferences.
Scroll to Spam protection.
Enable the hCaptcha options that apply to your storefront.
Save your changes in Shopify.
Shopify spam protection helps reduce spam before the customer reaches Glow. Shopify controls this setting, so the exact options can vary by store and theme.
Step 2: Block known bot emails in Glow
Use this when you already know which emails or domains are creating unwanted loyalty members.
In Glow:
Go to Settings > Account Settings.
Open the Behavior tab.
Find Block New Member Creation by Email.
Set the dropdown to Yes.
Add one or more block rules:
- Blocked Exact Emails for specific addresses, such as spam@example.com. - Blocked Domains for all emails from a domain, such as tempmail.com. - Blocked Regex Patterns only when you need advanced matching and are comfortable with regular expressions.
Click Save Settings.
After this is enabled, Glow will not create a new loyalty member when the customer's email matches one of your blocked rules.
What the Glow blocklist does
The blocklist stops new Glow loyalty member records from being created for matching emails.
It does not:
Delete Shopify customers.
Delete existing Glow loyalty members.
Remove points from existing members.
Stop all bots from reaching Shopify.
Use Shopify spam protection to reduce bot account creation at the storefront, and use the Glow blocklist to prevent matching emails from becoming new Glow loyalty members.
What to do with existing bot members
If bot members already exist in Glow, review them before changing balances. Do not remove points from real customers unless that matches your store's loyalty policy.
For clearly unwanted bot members, you can:
Set their points to
0so they no longer count as active members.Exclude the member from the loyalty program so they cannot earn points, redeem rewards, or receive loyalty notifications.
Contact Glow support if you have a large list of bogus members and can provide a CSV of the email addresses.
If bots are earning signup points
Signup points can make a new loyalty member active immediately. If bots are actively creating accounts and earning signup points, consider temporarily turning off signup points while you clean up the issue.
To review signup points:
Go to Settings > Account Settings.
Open the Rewards tab.
Review whether Create an account is enabled and how many points are awarded for signup.
Save any changes.
Turn signup points back on when you are comfortable with the protections in place.
